Şĕnĕ Tutarkassi or Novoe Atlaševo is a town in the Shupashkar Raion of Chuvashia.
The settlement has a remarkable history that starts with the medieval Mongol invasion of Europe which brought about the Tartars who built a fort which turned into a Tatar settlement, hence the Chuvash Name - New Tatar Shire.
When Muscovites started their campaign against Kazan Khanate they first wanted to get rid of the Mongols in the west bank of the Volga. It is recorded in the chronicles of that time that Ivan the Terrible himself was involved in the mayhem that killed nearly all of the dwellers of Tutarkassi in 1552 - old and young, women and children.
According to archives only one Tatar girl survived the bloodshed by accident, left lying unconscious in the rubble. She managed to call for help and soon the victims of the atrocity from both sides were buried the village used to be.
In 1554 the Tatar girl married a Chuvash man Atlaš - hence the Russian name of the settlement - Atlashevo. Soon a new Chuvash settlement grew instead of the old Tatar one, the graves were moved to a new place, which turned into Tutarkassi Cemetery.
